United States of America: Visiting Fellow to work with United Nations University coordination of Global Migration Group

The Visiting Fellow will be supervised by the Director of UNU-Institute on Globalization, Culture and Mobility (GCM), but will work at the UNU Office in New York (UNU-ONY). Under the supervision of the Director of UNU-GCM, and in close collaboration with the Head of Office of UNU-ONY, the Visiting Fellow will contribute to UNU’s work as 2017 Chair of the Global Migration Group by:

  1. Supporting the GMG Chair’s participation in GMG meetings, correspondence and engagement with GMG Members, including by:
    • supporting the implementation of the GMG’s multi-annual (2016–2018) and annual (2016) strategic and work plans
    • liaising with the support team of the GMG to prepare and staff relevant meetings and other activities
    • drafting agendas and taking minutes for internal and external meetings
    • drafting statements, background notes, and talking points, including the collection and compilation of GMG inputs
    • working with other UNU actors to coordinate and execute external communication by the GMG Chair and the GMG.
  2. Working to support GMG engagement with the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) and follow up to the Summit of 19 September 2016.
  3. Assisting the GMG Chair’s engagement with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Migration, and with intergovernmental negotiations related to migration.

Required qualifications and experience include:

  • postgraduate qualification or relevant professional expertise in the social sciences with demonstrable expertise on migration
  • experience of drafting UN documents; experience of working within the UN system is desirable
  • the ability to draft documents at short notice and to work well under pressure
  • excellent team-working skills
  • excellent command of spoken and written English
  • a good understanding of policy-relevant discussions and debates within the UN system of refugees and migrants
  • willingness to take up the frequent travel that is likely in this role
  • experience in coordinating multiparty processes with skill and tact; good public speaking skills; a strong understanding of diplomacy
  • demonstrated sensitivity to gender issues
  • good team player with strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multicultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity Remuneration
    Remuneration will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate, and will be between USD 90,000 and USD 110,000 per annum. There are no other financial allowances or benefits. The successful candidate will be responsible for arranging their tax liabilities.

Duration of contract
This is full-time employment on a Personnel Service Agreement (PSA) contract with UNU-GCM, from January 2017 to May 2018.

This is a locally recruited post; no relocation expenses or allowances apply. The successful candidate will be employed under a local contract and will not hold international civil servant status nor be a “staff member” as defined in the United Nations Staff Rules and Regulations. UNU does not sponsor a working visa for this position.
